In this research proposal (written as part of 60050 Research and Assessment), I outlined a strategy for conducting qualitative research to better understand the health information needs and behavior of homebound adults aged 85 or older. This project required me to carefully craft a research question that would advance understanding and make a positive impact within the information landscape. The oldest-old are often underrepresented in research. Understanding how this group seeks, evaluates and utilizes health information is increasingly important, as the global population ages. The proposed study would help guide the development of new theoretical frameworks and more effective outreach programs and services for a vulnerable and underserved population. By improving our understanding of their unique needs, we can help maintain the oldest adults’ health and independence, while reducing overall healthcare costs. The proposal reviews existing research and outlines methods for the collection, preparation, analysis and presentation of new data.
